The traditional cement floor tiles of Puerto Rico, reflect a dynamic fusion of local craftsmanship, industrial innovation, and architectural evolution. First brought to the island by ship from Barcelona around 1900, these hydraulic tiles rapidly replaced old Spanish colonial floorings made of wood, brick, or heavy stone. They offered a cleaner, more fracture-resistant surface that naturally repelled heat to keep island interiors cool. Their signature bright floral and geometric patterns—heavily influenced by European Modernism and Art Nouveau styles—drew widespread popularity across residential and public properties.
